My mum is now 87. She was a formidable person but with a heart of gold. She was charismatic, incredibly talented at anything she did including photography but she didn’t have it easy. She worked full time and raised 3 wayward boys on her own after my father died when I was 10 but that was a long time ago.
Old age and dementure have changed her, she has become a child again, the demons have left her and she has a lightness I never thought possible in her, nothing worries her, she only smiles and makes jokes, her neighbours upstairs don’t find her so endearing as she recently picked all their passionfruit while green making a still life display/sculpture in her kitchen from the ill gotten unripe fruit, the sort of thing people with dementure do.
I took this image of her recently testing a new lens (Sigma 50mm f1.4) I had purchased but when I put the camera to my eye I didn’t see the ‘little old lady’ I now know, I saw the woman I knew most of my life, someone I hadn’t seen for at least 7 years now.
