I had a call from Marnie early December, heres a paraphrase of that call “We’re getting married in 6 weeks, I’ve been following your blog for a year, I love your work and want you to photograph our wedding”……Now if you love a photographer, trying to book them 6 weeks out is a very risky business but as luck would have it they chose the only Saturday I had free in January but it got me thinking about a couple who operate like that. After meeting them and hearing their story I felt I kinda understood.
Marnie and Nick met through a mutual friend in the south of France in 2002 where they were both living and working at the time.
They were moving in a James Bond like world with Marnie working as personal chef for a ‘Russian Billionaire’ taking her at a moments notice anywhere on the globe catering for him and his glitteratti guests. Nick, a seaman, had a similar clientele driving luxury yachts of the mega rich around the Mediterranean but having now met these 2 Melbournite’s, so far from home, fell in love setting the foundations of this wedding in place.
In 2005 Nick returned to Melbourne to study and further his sea-mans skills. This meant 2 years living apart indispersed with globe spanning liaisons anywhere from Argentina, The Maldives, Cuba, south of France and….. even Melbourne, anywhere they could meet. In early 2008 Marnie moved back to Melbourne to be with Nick and in her words, “have a life together” it was time for a change.
With 100 of their friends and closet family they tied the knot in a beautiful, simple ceremony at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda, a fitting venue given the nautical theme in their lives. With Marnie now 6 months pregnant the next chapter of their lives is well under way. All the best my friends, it was an honor to be a part of you’re wedding day.
